Vending Machines can be a great opportunity for the right person or company. Your vending business can be scaled from a one location mom-n-pop operation all the way up to being a large corporate enterprise. Getting started is relatively simple and typically the initial investment can be only a few thousand dollars.
When starting out, many people think that the only option is to purchase new vending machines which although is very nice that can require a larger investment than is really necessary and therefore carries with it a larger risk should the effort prove to be unsuccessful. Another very good option is to purchase a used vending machine when first starting out. Used vending machines are the least expensive option, however, on the flip side of that they also tend to have high maintenance costs and greater down time due to mechanical problems.
Often the best option is to purchase what is known as refurbished machines from a reputable distributor. A refurbished vending machine starts out as a used machine but is then completely restored to a like new state. They are more expensive up front than a used machine but cost considerably less than a new one yet offer the same reliability and professional look, plus they often come with guarantees.
Once you’ve purchased your machines you then need to find an appropriate location. It’s a very good strategy to establish a location that gets plenty of foot traffic. When choosing inventory for your location make sure that its appropriate for the type of potential customers that exist in that area. Water or energy drinks might be a good choice near a sporting area such as a gym or athletic track whereas something like candy bars and snacks could do really well near entertainment centers.
When committing to a location you will often need to negotiate a percentage of the sales from your machine to pay to the location owner. You will want to be professional when approaching a business owner when trying to get that location for your equipment. Once installed, again be professional and keep your machine stocked and serviced on a regular schedule. It is also a good idea to have a ready source of vending machine parts.
Once the location has proven itself to be profitable with one or two machines its just a matter of repeating the above steps to grow your route. Some people will build routes and then resell them at a profit. This can be of an advantage to those who have little interest in running a business long term but enjoy the start up process. Purchasing an established route can be a good idea for those who’ve never located machines before or who are more interested in maintaining an existing business then building a new one.
Like any business there are benefits as well as risks. Be sure to evaluate both sides of the equation when considering vending as a business.
